ART BASEL 2017
June 15 - 18, 2017
Pace/MacGill Gallery is pleased to announce its participation in the 2017 edition of Art Basel from June 15 – 18. The gallery is honored to present for the first time at Art Basel a selection of photographs by Yoshitomo Nara.
Since the mid-1990s, Nara (b. 1964) has exhibited around the world and has worked with a range of institutions, from small independent art spaces to internationally renowned museums and galleries. For Nara, the type of institution or the size of a space matters less than how connected he feels with its environment and its audience. His approach to art is also similarly dependent on his sense of connection with its making. His paintings are expressions of colors that breathe life into his bold images, his recent sculptures bear traces of his fingers that have shaped their forms, and his drawings capture the spontaneity of thought. The fragmentary images in Nara's photographs – clipped from everyday life and travels – reveal the artist's world view, perspective, sense of color, and sensibility, all of which are the context of his works and allow us to know his deeper layers.
Alongside this single-artist presentation will be an installation of modern and contemporary photographs including those by Diane Arbus, Richard Avedon, Chuck Close, Robert Frank, Paul Graham, Richard Learoyd, Jocelyn Lee, Richard Misrach, Irving Penn, Michal Rovner, Viviane Sassen, and Fred Wilson, among others.
Pace/MacGill Gallery will exhibit adjacent to its partner, Pace Gallery, whose booth will feature a special selection of important historical works by Donald Judd, David Hockney, and Louise Nevelson, in addition to works by Adam Pendleton, Kiki Smith, Tony Smith and numerous other gallery artists. In the Unlimited sector of the fair, Pace will present large-scale installation works by Michal Rovner, Tony Smith, and Song Dong.
